Daniel smiled. “I . . . just wanted to say . . . uhh, thanks for my new wife!” he stammered. “Well, good night now!” Daniel pulled the woman back in the room. She was still crying. “Sorry about that,” he told her. “I still don’t want to get married. But you can stay here if you want.” She wiped away her tears. Daniel looked at her and blushed again. Ever since he’d first laid eyes on her, he’d wanted nothing more than to talk to her alone. Now he had his big chance, and he didn’t know what to say.

Meanwhile, in the same building,- Kawalsky, Brown, and O’Neil were sitting around the table in the living area of the apartment Kasuf had given them. They were trying to get a signal from Feretti on the shortwave radio.

“It isn’t working,” Brown said. “Their radio must be dead.”

“Keep trying,” O’Neil said, fingering the orange key in his pocket. Just then the curtains parted. O’Neil lifted his head.

Their visitor was Skaara, the shepherd boy. All night long, the boy had been following O Neil around. Now, he ran over and sat right down beside the colonel. “It’s okay,” said O’Neil in reply to Kawalsky’s questioning glance. “The kid can stay.”

Ignoring the boy, O’Neil shook a cigarette from the pack on the table and lit it. Eager to imitate everything O’Neil did, Skaara reached for the pack, too. Shaking out a cigarette, he clumsily lit it. He grinned at O’Neil,

feeling proud of himself. O’Neil took a deep drag on his cigarette. With a smirk, Skaara also raised the cigarette to his lips. The moment the smoke hit his lungs, the boy’s eyes bulged out. He doubled over, coughing and gagging. With a look of disgust, he threw the foul fire- stick on the floor, never to smoke again.

“Good move,” said O’Neil. “These things’ll kill you.” Then he saw that Skaara was reaching for his pistol. “No!” O’Neil roared, pinning the boy’s hand to the table. “No! Dangerous!” As Kawalsky and Brown stared in shock, he slapped Skaara hard. “No, no, no!” The boy wriggled out of his grasp and raced out of the room. O’Neil put his head in his hands.

He was thinking of his son Jack Junior. Even before this, Skaara had reminded him of his son, but now . . . O’Neil shuddered remembering J.J.’s death. Once again, in an instant, he replayed in his mind all the years and hours spent playing with the boy. He had encouraged his son to be curious and daring—fearless, just like his dad. His wife, Sarah, warned him that he was making the boy too reckless. But O’Neil only smirked at her. “You don’t understand how it is with boys,” he said. Remembering this, O’Neil groaned and banged his head against the table. If only he had listened to Sarah, J.J. might still be alive.

Brown, watching O’Neil’s outburst, turned to Kawalsky. “Is it just me,” he whispered, “or is something wrong with that guy?”

“Just follow his orders,” Kawalsky said.
